Principles of STN technology
The display principle of the STN type is similar to that of TN, except that the liquid crystal molecule with the TN torsional nematic field effect rotates the incident light by 90 degrees, while the STN super-torsional nematic field effect rotates the incident light by 180~270 degrees. It should be noted here that the TN LCD itself only has two situations of light and dark (or black and white), and there is no way to change the color. However, if a color filter is added to the traditional monochrome STN liquid crystal display, and any pixel of the monochrome display matrix (pixel) is divided into three sub-pixels, the red, green, and blue primary colors are displayed through the color filter, and then the colors of the full-color mode can also be displayed through the harmony of the three primary color ratios. In addition, TN type LCD displays have a smaller screen size, but STN's improved technology can make up for the lack of contrast.
STN-LCD structure
The internal structure of the STN-LCD color screen module, the upper part of which is an LCD screen composed of polarizer, glass and liquid crystal, and the lower part is a white LED and a backlight board, which also includes the LCD driver IC, and a low dropout regulator (LDO) that provides a stable power supply for the LCD driver IC, two to eight white LEDs, and a boost regulator IC driven by LED.
The way the LCD screen is driven
simple matrix drive method is composed of vertical and horizontal electrodes, the part to be driven is controlled by the horizontal voltage, and the vertical electrodes are responsible for driving the liquid crystal molecules. In TN and STN type LCDs, the pure drive electrode method used is a cross drive of the X and Y axes, so if the display part becomes larger and larger, the reaction time of the center electrode may be relatively long. And in order to make the screen display consistent, the overall speed will be slowed down. To put it simply, it seems that the screen of the CRT monitor is not updated fast enough, that is, the user will feel the screen flickering and jumping; Or when you need to display a fast 3D animation, but the display speed of the display cannot keep up, the display may be delayed. Therefore, early LCD monitors had certain size limitations, and they were not suitable for watching movies or playing 3D games.
active matrix is driven by a set of electrodes for each element, which is a bit like a DRAM loop, and the voltage is scanned (or charged at a certain time) to represent the state of each element. In order to improve this situation, the liquid crystal display technology was later driven by an active-matrix addressing, which is an ideal device to achieve a high data density liquid crystal display effect with extremely high resolution. The method is to use a silicon transistor electrode made of thin-film technology, and use the scanning method to select any display point (pixel) to turn on and off. In fact, the nonlinear function of thin-film transistors is used to replace the nonlinear function of liquid crystals, which is difficult to control. In the TFT type liquid crystal display, the conductive glass is drawn on the net-shaped small line, and the electrodes are matrix switches arranged by thin film transistors, and there is a control box at the intersection of each line, although the driving signal is quickly scanned at each display point, but only the selected display point in the transistor matrix on the electrode gets enough voltage to drive the liquid crystal molecule, so that the liquid crystal molecular axis turns into a "bright" contrast, and the display point that is not selected is naturally the "dark" contrast. Therefore, it avoids the dependence of the display function on the ability of the liquid crystal electric field effect.
